Good news, dear readers: I have yet to purchase a cheap pack of crayons during this season known as “Back to School.”
Last August I went a bit crazy and purchased approximately 27 boxes of yellow crayon boxes, partly because they were only a quarter a box and partly because I *heart* school supplies.
However, this year I have managed to refrain from buying even one single box of Crayolas. This is quite the remarkable feat considering the new location of casa de phillips has an art closet, a space designed to hold such goodies as crayons called “Cadet Blue” and “Jazzberry Jam.”
Moving on…
Although I greatly enjoy summer, I start to look forward to Back to School around the 5th of July. I love the promise a new academic year brings. The chance to get schedules in place and put our family in order makes me happy. In fact, as I type this I have a document opened on my laptop titled “Things to do to prepare for Back to School.” It is growing by the minute and I feel a bit giddy as I add ideas my little document.
Yeah, I am kindof a dork.
But I am cool with that.
Because some of you are likely starting to (or already have) get into the “Back to School” mindset, here are some links I have found to be fun or useful for this time of year.
Enjoy!
- Real Simple’s Back to School Food Planner. I especially love the 10 easy breakfast ideas on this link. I am forever attempting to think of something creative for breakfast that is quick and painless…..and does not involve a frozen waffle.
- I may have a garage full of boxes waiting to be unpacked, but I have a pantry that I am itching to organize. Here is my inspiration. I am also contemplating painting the pantry door (which is currently unfinished and so not pretty) with chalkboard paint. However, I am going to use tinted chalkboard paint that coordinates with the other paint in the house (if I indeed go this route). I am just incredibly leary of all the dust having a chalkboard in the kitchen might generate….
- Back to School also means football season. Let me be honest and say that I am really not into sports at all (unless obsessively listening to The Ticket, a local sports radio station, counts). However, I do have pride for my home state and their college football team. This shirt, displaying a touch of school spirit, is simply too adorable for words.
- On my list of Back to School things to accomplish is “Menu Plan.” I must be honest and say that I have not been good with my menu planning at all this summer. In fact, rather than planning I have resorted more to sticking my hand in the freezer and seeing what I can pull out. If you are ready to get back on track with your menu planning just like me, here is a super cute way to post the weekly menu.
- This year my kids will not eat lunch at school (Yeah!….I think.). However, I love the idea of having a lunch bin that makes packing lunches a breeze.
- Another change for my kids this school year is that they will be wearing uniforms. This has made Back to School shopping rather easy….and given me an excuse to dream about fun mommy “Back to School” clothing options. Currently, I am loving the shirt dress for Fall (which is replacing the love affair I had with the maxi dress this summer). I happened to snatch up a shirt dress (as seen here) at the beginning of the summer for $10 at Kohls. Old Navy is currently carrying a similar style. The “robbie red” is really calling my name….

I absolutely LOVE the meal planning board and will more than likely be making one for us (we do lots of meal planning to avoid excessive purchases at the grocery store) and probably something like that for a christmas gift for Brit.
The fact that you listen to The Ticket is, in a word, greatness. More wives should open their mind to radio station that most likely captures their husband’s attention for hours a day.
Tobe got me hooked on it! I seriously listen to it a lot….have it on right now listening to BaD Radio. However, the Musers and the Hardline are my favorites…
Isn’t it adorable? Let me know how yours turns out because I am gonna tackle one soon.
I loved reading all of your ideas. Your pantry organizing plan is very appealing to me. I’m afraid mine looks a little bit like the “before” picture. Please do post pictures if you do decide to go with the chalkboard paint door. I’d love to see how it looks. Also, the shirt dress is very cute. I really like the ease and comfort of dresses these days and am always looking for new ideas. The shirt dress might be just the thing for me to get after our baby is born.
Thanks for the cute ideas, Lynley!
