Thursday stared off fairly normal.
The husband went to work.
The children ate breakfast.
I bemoaned the fact that my hair never looks like the Pinterest Pins I covet daily.
The approaching weekend happened to be a busy one, filled with science fairs, basketball games, two birthday parties and a visit from the grandparents. Because of this whirlwind of a schedule, we moved some school items around and began the day by cleaning the house.
Everything was running fairly smoothly until 10 am when the boy entered our art closet and questioned aloud why it was wet.
Initially thinking someone for some bizarre reason spilled water in there, I went to investigate.
Yeah, it was wet. Very wet. So wet it sent me to investigate the hot water heater, which happened to be leaking.
Deep breaths.
I decided a leaking hot water heater was not a huge deal, mainly because I had dealt with one before at our old house. The water damage was minimal at that point, localized only to the floor of the hot water heater closet and the floor of the art closet. Towels were retrieved, calls were made and I made a futile attempt to manually shut off the water to the house (so not successful at that…especially when a lizard jumped out the hole and scared me half to death).
A repair tech finally arrived around 6pm that evening, confirming my belief that the hot water heater was busted and we needed to replace it. Not my idea of ways to spend extra money, but such is the life of a homeowner. The man detailed an easy exchange of heaters, promising hot water would be flowing through our pipes again by night’s end.
A collective sigh was heard all through the house.
Then a tidal wave rushed out of the mud room into the living room.
Something went wrong as the man was replacing the heater and the water from the old tank rushed into our house rather than out the water line into our yard.
Did I mention the tank holds 50 gallons of water?
Seems that 50 gallons of water aren’t so good for the beautiful laminate floors. We now have the large dehumidifiers blowing on large portions of our flooring, just like we had two years ago when we moved into this house and the water line to the fridge burst. The floors cannot be saved, so they will once again be ripped up and replaced. I plan on replacing them with exactly the same thing because I love those floors. The word is that the plumbing company is responsible for the damage and will cover all the repairs. We are praying this to be true.
This morning, I am focusing on having joy in the morning. Sure I feel like I am living in an airport hanger with five jumbo jets revving their engines constantly. No one can talk to each other downstairs because it is simply too hard to have a conversation over the roar of the fans. One birthday party is having to be relocated and the grandparents had to settle themselves into a hotel rather than bunking with us.
Yet my kids are healthy. There is food in my pantry. The daffodils are blooming outside my front window.
And water…we have plenty and plenty of water.
Something many people in the world pray for daily.
What are your blessings today?
